What you need to know about this course

The objectives of the Falls Prevention Home & Community Safety Online Workshop:

  1. Understand the foundations for clinical reasoning of the revised Westmead schema:
    1. Understanding the older person and profiling their risk;
    2. Moving through the home environment and collaborative problem solving for risk reduction; and
    3. Prioritising and planning
  2. Be able to use validated assessment tools relevant to the older person and situation
  3. Understand how to engage the older person jointly in the decision-making process, to raise awareness, establish priorities and solutions and to change habits

Who is this course for?

Anyone who provides services to older people who are at risk of falling, in particular, occupational therapists, are invited to join our workshop to build new knowledge and enhance current practice in home environment interventions to prevent falls of older people.

What is Online Learning?

With online learning you can design your own schedule. You create your own learning environment. There are no set hours per week and you complete your assessments when you are ready. You can study whenever you want, wherever you want and on whatever device you choose.  You can download course material and further reading or resources.

We allow you to start your course on any day of the year and you complete the course in your own time.

How long will the course take?

The course has been designed in six half hour modules, and takes a total of 3 hours to complete.

There are also additional readings and resources you can access for further information as you go through the course.

What will I obtain on completion of the course?

An online printable certificate.  The hours taken to complete the course can be included in your professional development hours.

How much does the course cost?

The 6 modules and estimated time frames

Each of the following 6 modules takes approximately 30 minutes to complete:

Module 1 What is the evidence

Module 2 Profiling personal risk

Moving through the home environment and collaborative problem solving

Module 3 Foundations for clinical reasoning

Module 4 Techniques and tools

Prioritising and Planning

Module 5 Lifestyle checks (optional complimentary fall prevention resources)

Module 6 Action plan for change

You can dip in and out of the modules in your own time, and return as often as you like. Try using it as a group activity.  Module 6 in particular would be great to do as a small group or in-service activity.
